Manipulating overstory density and mineral soil exposure for optimal natural regeneration of Scots pine

چکیده

In northern boreal region the growth of forests is slow, and yield profit are low, which why low reforestation costs important for profitable forestry. If natural regeneration successful, expensive artificial forest (planting or direct seeding) can be avoided. this study, we look at impact overstory density site preparation on seedling Scots pine. Study stands were established in different parts Northern Finland each stand following treatments: 50, 150 250 trees ha−1 unthinned control, where was ≥ ha−1, randomly allocated to experimental plots. addition, (disc trenching, 4000–5000 m ha−1) carried out two plots tree either 50 ha−1. number, age monitored 11 years. Monitoring revealed that number seedlings increased with decreasing density. Average height very even non-existent control densest (250 treatment, but when decreased. The highest achieved soil prepared expose mineral soil. Achieving e.g. 2000 would need about 40% exposition required implies not only seed supply from success pine also reduction competition by mature trees.

Natural Regeneration of Scots Pine and Norway Spruce Close to the Timberline in Northern Finland

Two different datasets were analyzed in order to clarify the factors that affect regeneration success of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) and Norway spruce (Picea abies) in the climatically extreme areas in northern Finland. First, pine seed maturity and the number of cones in the trees were investigated at five pairs of study sites during the period 1997–2003. Secondly, the rate of seedling estab...

Effects of timing of soil frost thawing on Scots pine.

Effects of the timing of soil thawing in the spring on Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) were studied under controlled laboratory conditions. Sixteen 6-year-old saplings were lifted from the field, replanted in containers and placed in four treatments in controlled environment (CE) chambers with four replicate saplings per chamber. The saplings were held in the CE chambers during one simulated w...

Ectomycorrhizal Fungi and Mineral Interactions in the Rhizosphere of Scots and Red Pine Seedlings

Ectomycorrhizal fungi and associated bacteria play a key role in plant-driven mineral weathering and uptake of mineral-derived nutrients in the rhizosphere. The goal of this study was to investigate the physical and chemical characteristics of bacteria-fungi-mineral interactions in biofilms of Scots and red pine rhizospheres. In three experiments, seedlings were grown in columns containing sili...

simulation and experimental studies for prediction mineral scale formation in oil field during mixing of injection and formation water

abstract: mineral scaling in oil and gas production equipment is one of the most important problem that occurs while water injection and it has been recognized to be a major operational problem. the incompatibility between injected and formation waters may result in inorganic scale precipitation in the equipment and reservoir and then reduction of oil production rate and water injection rate. ...
